1978 Camaro Macho Z28 Prototype

DKM Macho Z28 #1

“Our one-off, first-ever-built prototypical Macho-Z Number 1 (Kindly diverted to Hod Rod with the cooperation of its permanent owner, Don Chapman Chevrolet of Tempe). The only ‘78 model Macho-Z to be released by DKM arrived with goodies galore…”

Hot Rod -September ‘78.....

The "Macho Z" Camaro is Born…..

To compete with the Macho TAs that were terrorizing the streets, DKM partnered with Chapman Chevrolet to produce the Macho Z, the Chevy half of the F-body dynamic duo from DKM.  In preparation for the 1979 model year, a single 1978 Z-28 Camaro Prototype was converted to a "Macho Z". Expected 1979 Macho Z production totals were 200 units, however only 7 Macho Z cars were built and 4 are currently accounted for.  DKM also produced a limited number of Camaro Z29 and Z29R cars, built on the Berlinetta platform.

The Macho Z on display here is the original 1978 prototype built by DKM for Chapman Chevrolet that graced the pages of Hot Rod Magazine in 1978. It was the only 1978 Macho Z-28 built and has survived after all these years with most of its original paint, original drivetrain, koni shocks, dual cat exhaust, Hurst-T shifter and chrome roll bar.

This One of One prototype Camaro is accompanied with a letter of authenticity from Dennis Mecham, GM records, all invoices, build sheet, Hot Rod Magazine License Plate, owner’s manual  packet and of course a September 1978 issue of Hot Rod Magazine, and other magazine features including the "Throwback" story in Muscle Car Review-July 2014.
